The Grand Mosque
- Only with a free entry stamp: taxi to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.
- Dress modestly; women need to cover their hair.
- Straight back to the airport.
Abu Dhabi follows the same UAE entry rules as Dubai: free entry stamps for Western and East Asian passports, a visa on arrival for Indians with a qualifying US or EU visa, and the Etihad transit visa for everyone else. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is about 20 minutes away.
Rules researched 28 Oct 2026. Always confirm with the official source and your airline.

Zayed International's Terminal A handles all flights, and connections on one booking stay airside with no UAE visa needed.
One main terminal, so no terminal change.
The UAE has almost no domestic flights, so connections here are international.
On separate tickets you may have to collect your bags and check in again, which means entering the UAE: a free entry stamp for visa-free passports, or an Etihad transit visa or other UAE visa for everyone else.
Allow at least 60–75 minutes, more on separate tickets.
None of the 16 passports we cover needs a visa to change planes airside at AUH, on one booking with your bags checked through. Entering the country, for a terminal change through immigration, a domestic flight or separate tickets, follows the rules in the table above.

There's no metro in Abu Dhabi, so taxis are the fastest option for a layover.
| Option | Time | Cost | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Taxi | About 20 min to the Grand Mosque, 30–40 min to the Corniche | Around AED 70–100 to the city | 24 hours, from outside the terminal. |
| Bus A1 to the city | About 45–60 min | A few dirhams with a Hafilat card | Runs around the clock, but slower. |
Times assume you can leave the airport with your passport. Pick the plan that fits your layover, not your hopes.
