Just changing planes? Do you need a visa at IST?

International-to-international connections at Istanbul Airport stay airside with no Turkish visa needed. Turkish Airlines passengers usually have their bags checked through.

Changing terminals

One terminal, with domestic and international areas.

Going on to a domestic flight

Connecting to a domestic Turkish flight means passing passport control and collecting your bags at Istanbul, so you enter Türkiye and need a visa or e-Visa if your passport requires one.

Separate tickets (self-transfer)

On separate tickets you have to collect your bags and check in again, which means entering Türkiye: Indian and Nepali passports need an e-Visa or visa.

How long to allow

Allow at least 60–90 minutes, more for international to domestic.

Airport transit visa by passport

None of the 16 passports we cover needs a visa to change planes airside at IST, on one booking with your bags checked through. Entering the country, for a terminal change through immigration, a domestic flight or separate tickets, follows the rules in the table above.

75 mineach way to the main sights
2 hback at the airport before departure
7 hminimum layover for 90 minutes outside

With well over an hour each way, a 10-hour layover leaves only about 4 hours in the old city. This is the most common mistake people make at Istanbul.
