Stay airside, unless you're visa-free
- If you can walk out quickly: metro to Souq Waqif for a coffee and a wander, then straight back.
- Otherwise: the big yellow Lamp Bear, a quiet room and a proper meal airside.
Most Western passports can walk out of Hamad visa-free, and the Red Line metro reaches Souq Waqif in under half an hour. Indian travellers have extra conditions, and Nepali travellers need a visa or the airport transit visa.

Hamad is a single terminal, and international connections on one booking stay airside with no Qatari visa needed for any passport.
One terminal, so no terminal change.
Qatar has no domestic flights, so every connection here is international.
On separate tickets you may have to collect your bags and check in again, which means entering Qatar. Visa-free passports are fine; others need a visa (or the Qatar Airways transit visa, if eligible).
Allow at least 60 minutes, more on separate tickets.
None of the 16 passports we cover needs a visa to change planes airside at DOH, on one booking with your bags checked through. Entering the country, for a terminal change through immigration, a domestic flight or separate tickets, follows the rules in the table above.

On a Friday morning the metro isn't running yet, so plan on a taxi.
| Option | Time | Cost | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doha Metro, Red Line | About 25 min to Msheireb (for Souq Waqif) | QR 2 per ride, plus a QR 10 travel card | From about 5:30 am, but only from 2 pm on Fridays. Last trains around 11 pm. |
| Karwa taxi | About 20–25 min | Around QR 50 to the centre | 24 hours. Best choice on a Friday morning. |
Times assume you can leave the airport with your passport. Pick the plan that fits your layover, not your hopes.
