Frankfurt layover: can you leave Frankfurt Airport?

Frankfurt is Lufthansa's main hub and one of the easiest big European airports to leave: the S-Bahn reaches the city centre in about 15 minutes. It's in the Schengen area, so most Western and East Asian passports walk out visa-free. Since June 2026 Indian travellers can change planes here without an airport transit visa, but they still need a Schengen visa to leave.

Just changing planes? Do you need a visa at FRA?

Connections between non-Schengen flights stay in the transit area. Since 3 June 2026 Indian passports no longer need an airport transit visa in Germany, and Nepal isn't on Germany's list either.

Changing terminals

The free SkyLine train links Terminals 1 and 2. You may have to go through security, and sometimes passport control, on the way, so follow the transfer signs and allow time.

Flying on within Europe (Schengen)

If your next flight goes to another Schengen country, you pass passport control here and enter the Schengen area, so you need whatever you'd need to leave the airport (a Schengen visa for Indian and Nepali passports). Flights on to non-Schengen countries stay in the international transit area.

Separate tickets (self-transfer)

On separate tickets you collect your bags at reclaim and check them in again, which means entering Germany: a Schengen visa for Indian and Nepali passports.

How long to allow

Allow at least 45–60 minutes, and more if you change terminal.
